Sirius Staffing is seeking a detail-oriented Distribution Standards Engineer / Drafter to support a leading utility client. This role is ideal for a candidate with strong drafting experience, a solid engineering foundation, and the ability to maintain and revise technical standards that support safe, accurate, and efficient distribution system design.
This position offers the opportunity to work closely with cross-functional teams and play a key role in supporting engineering standards, design consistency, and compliance across critical utility operations.
Position Overview
The Distribution Standards Engineer / Drafter is responsible for designing, developing, revising, and maintaining electric distribution standards and special designs in compliance with the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and internal engineering requirements. This individual will support the upkeep of technical drawings, standards documentation, approved materials, and construction-related design resources used across the organization.
Work Schedule
- Hybrid: Minimum 3 days onsite per week
- Monday – Friday
- Core Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
- Flexible Start Time: 6:30 AM or 7:30 AM
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and revise distribution standards and special designs in compliance with NESC requirements
- Develop and maintain all standards related to M-drawings, H-drawings, Construction Standards, Special Designs, and TEMS drawings
- Provide timely drafting updates to distribution engineering and other internal customers
- Update and maintain the Approved Materials Catalogue (AMC)
- Prepare for and meet deadlines associated with monthly Standard Practice Committee Meetings (SPCM)
- Complete all required drafting updates and documentation support for monthly standards activities
- Review and proof engineers’ and technicians’ work for correct construction design application
- Collaborate with internal teams including Distribution Engineering, Asset Management, Safety, Training, Transmission Engineering, Metering, Procurement, and other departments
Daily Responsibilities
- Meet with the Standards Supervisor to review and prioritize assignments
- Revise and maintain standards documents and technical drawings
- Participate in weekly standards meetings and monthly SPCM meetings
- Support drafting updates, standards revisions, and peer review activities
- Manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and timeliness
Requirements
- Engineering degree required
- Proficiency in CAD and/or MicroStation
- Prior drafting or drawing experience
- Ability to review designs for completeness, consistency, and construction accuracy
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to manage deadlines and shifting priorities
- Strong written communication and documentation skills
- Ability to work collaboratively across multiple departments
Preferred Qualifications
- Utility experience, ideally 2–4+ years
- Experience with engineering standards, construction drawings, or electric distribution documentation
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Technical writing experience
- Strong graphics and drafting capabilities
- Independent, analytical, and adaptable work style
- Typing and general computer proficiency
