Electrical Project Engineer
Job Description
Sirius Staffing is seeking an Electrical Project Engineer for a 2–3-year contract in Richmond, VA. In this role, you will lead capital project execution at an industrial facility. This client-facing role involves overseeing and coordinating electrical and instrumentation (E&I) engineering and construction activities, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
$60-90/hr + Benefits offered + potential relocation package
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the Owner’s Representative for capital project execution.
- Act as the primary liaison with the Engineering Contractor during the FEED/FEL-3 process for ISBL and OSBL equipment, reviewing approval drawings and providing feedback. Lead meetings with Client SMEs, site personnel, and engineering contractors.
- Conduct bid walks with contractors for budgetary and firm proposals, ensuring timely responses to Requests for Information (RFIs).
- Support project management from initial scope development through final closure, including risk assessments, budgeting, engineering/design, procurement, construction execution, commissioning, startup, and documentation.
- Advocate safety awareness, ensuring the consistent implementation of policies and procedures. Participate in construction safety audits and contractor safety meetings, enforcing a zero-recordable safety culture.
- Prepare bid packages and Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for materials, equipment, and services, evaluating bids to ensure cost-effective vendor selection.
- Manage construction contractors for electrical and instrumentation (E&I) fieldwork execution.
- Collaborate with construction coordinators to plan and oversee project construction activities.
- Interface with key site and company personnel—including engineering, purchasing, operations, and business teams—to optimize resource utilization. Work closely with equipment vendors and contracting firms as needed.
- Oversee electrical system design, including power distribution (transformers, switchgear, high-voltage/medium-voltage gear), MCC design, one-line diagrams, schematics, power and lighting layouts, grounding panel design, motor cable/conduit sizing, and Area Classification compliance.
- Manage instrumentation system design, covering instrument types, location plans, indexes, supplier interfaces, installation, loop checks, and pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR).
- Review E&I engineering deliverables, such as single-line diagrams, conduit and cable schedules, grounding plans, electrical load lists, ISA instrument data sheets, instrumentation indexes, wiring diagrams, location plans, installation details, and vendor drawings.
- Perform project control activities, including estimating, cost control, and scheduling updates.
Travel: 10% in the first year (to Engineering offices, out-of-state)
Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Electrical Engineering preferred
- 5-10 years of project engineering work experience, preferably in chemical or heavy industry, continuous process plant, or a design engineering firm.
- Familiarity with electrical and instrumentation systems such as electrical load list, power/grounding/lighting system design, transformers/switchgear/MCC design, instrumentation specifications, instrumentation loops/wiring interface to DCS/PLC, and instrument indexes/I-O list.
- Basic understanding of industrial work practices related to Health, Safety, and Environmental impacts.
- The client requires the candidate to be eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Desired/Preferred Qualifications:
- Work experience in oil, petrochemical, or chemical operating facilities. Other heavy industry experience, such as pulp & paper, is acceptable.
- Previous experience in operations, technology, maintenance, construction, construction management, or HSE.
- Previous experience in an operating industrial facility (chemical, petrochemical, or other heavy manufacturing).
- SAP software knowledge preferred
- Working knowledge of project management processes, including stage gate processes.
- Working knowledge of project control functions and their application to capital projects (Estimating, Scheduling, and Cost Control).
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
This role involves both office and fieldwork within an operating plant environment. Candidates must have normal hearing and strong physical capability, including the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb, and balance. Clear vision (both near and far), depth perception, and the ability to focus are essential.
Key physical and work requirements:
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods while working on a computer and operating standard office equipment.
- Capability to bend, stoop, and climb stairs or ladders as needed.
- Must be able to drive a company vehicle between job sites and office locations.
- Willingness to attend job walks in a hot climate while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
