Job Description

Sirius Staffing is seeking a Mechanical Laboratory Technician for our client in Allentown, PA. This ideal candidate will have a mechanical background to perform mechanical testing and the ability to explain mechanical and physical tests performed on high-performance polymer materials.

Per appropriate laboratory and safety guidelines, the Mechanical Laboratory Technician performs accurate and timely mechanical and thermal testing of routine and non-routine lab samples. This ensures that results and samples meet internal and external customer requirements. Key terms to be familiar with are material properties, tensile, flexural, impact, hardness, density, rheology, calorimetry, and thermomechanical.
 
The Mechanical Laboratory Technician will also participate in laboratory investigations, equipment evaluations and qualifications, and quality improvement initiatives.  The role includes preparing and maintaining standard operating procedure (SOP), hazard review, setting up analytical equipment, performing equipment maintenance and calibration, safeguarding samples and testing records, and safely performing all the above.
 
Principal Accountabilities (sample testing, analysis, and reporting):
  • Accurately perform all technical procedures within the area of responsibility
  • Knowledgeable and proficient at the use of laboratory data management systems, maintaining logbooks and test records
  • Document reviewer for laboratory procedures
  • Generate lab reports as requested
  • Interpret and follow material testing standards (ISO, ASTM, internal)
  • Interpret and follow safety data sheets (SDS)
  • Trainer/mentor for other operators in departmental operations
  • Understand the prioritization of lab tasks and reprioritization as appropriate
  • Support maintenance, modifications, improvements, troubleshooting, and repairs of equipment
  • Work closely with coworkers within the lab team and other teams
  • Recognize when there is a gap in documentation and operation and recommend an appropriate path forward
  • Systematically approach troubleshooting and can assist with the resolution of most complex problems
  • Challenges the status quo and suggest alternative solutions in a positive manner
  • Proactively communicates with internal customers and provides them with necessary support
  • Effectively communicate/interact with departmental management and customers outside of the department
 
Other Lab Support:
  • Quality compliance efforts
  • ESHS compliance efforts
  • Logistics efforts
 
Qualifications:
  • Associate Degree in Material Science, Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience
  • 2-4 years of mechanical testing experience
  • Experience with high-temperature polymers
  • Good mechanical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to follow testing procedures (SOP, ISO, ASTM)
  • Ability to interpret and evaluate testing procedures and solve problems
  • Demonstrated ability in method development
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, SharePoint, Teams)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to lift 50 lb. without assistance
  • Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Ability to climb stairs
  • Ability to work overtime if needed
 
Environmental, Safety, Health, & Security (ESHS):
  • Adhere to all ESHS programs, policies, & procedures 
  • Assume personal accountability for individual behaviors related to ESHS activities
  • Have the appropriate knowledge and tools before performing a task
  • Complete all required ESHS training and remain current with applicable learning plans at all times
  • Report all injuries to ESHS and supervision within the same shift of the incident occurring
  • Inform direct supervision of any ESHS hazards or concerns in the workplace
  • Provide feedback and coaching to coworkers on both safe and unsafe behaviors and conditions
  • Actively participate in the ESHS management system as directed by supervision
