Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Civil Structural Designer for a contract-to-direct position in Theodore, AL. The Senior Civil Structural Designer is responsible for developing detailed civil structural plans and designs. This role involves leading design efforts independently for small to medium-sized projects or managing specific areas of scope on larger projects. 

Pay - $50-$65/hr

Work Schedule - Typically 4/10s Mon-Thur 7a-5p, off on Fridays

Education and Experience:
  • Associate’s degree or technical certificate in Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) is required.
  • BS or MS in civil or structural engineering or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum 10+ years in Civil/Structural Engineering Design or related functional area (or equivalent working knowledge/experience) required.
  • Requirements:  Candidates must submit a resume and three professional references
 
Essential Functions:  
  • Work autonomously on small to medium-sized projects under the direction of the project lead engineer, serving as a stand-alone design resource.
  • On larger projects, take responsibility for a specific area of scope and potentially lead the discipline effort with periodic oversight by an engineer.
  • Develop and prepare detailed structural plans and designs using software like AutoCAD Civil 3D or Navisworks.
  • Design structural elements such as steel frameworks, foundations, culverts, and retaining walls for industrial facilities.
  • Provide person-hour estimates, develop schedules, and plan work effectively.
  • Interface with clients, department and discipline managers, and project lead engineers on technical items, including staff assignments and required capabilities.
  • Oversee the construction process to ensure designs are implemented accurately and efficiently according to project specifications.
  • Conduct site visits to monitor progress and make necessary design adjustments.
  • Perform structural investigations to identify issues and propose solutions or rehabilitation projects.
  • Analyze project objectives to ensure alignment with design specifications and safety standards.
  • Ensure all designs comply with local and international standards, statutory requirements, and safety regulations.
  • Provide safety recommendations throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams and coordinate with other engineering disciplines for cohesive project execution.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical documentation, including civil general arrangement drawings, specifications, and calculation packages.
  • Review and approve technical documents as part of the quality assurance process.
  • Manage project budgets and schedules, monitor progress against goals, and identify scope changes.
  • Communicating impacts of scope changes to project leads to ensure timely project completion.
  • Coordinate designs with other disciplines and provide input on developing company standards and work processes.
  • Mentor and train department drafters and designers, providing performance feedback to discipline managers and project lead engineers.
  • Check drafting work performed by others within the assigned discipline.
  • Ensure proper use of CAD borders and standards for company and client requirements.
  • Assemble construction design packages and issue them according to company procedures.
  • Take ownership of assigned tasks, ensuring their completeness and correctness promptly.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  
Skills & Qualifications:
  • CADD Certificate and/or relevant work experience using AutoCAD or other CAD software; CADWORX 3D software and NAVISWORKS viewer experience preferred
  • In-depth understanding of civil and structural engineering fundamentals and basic knowledge of other engineering fields.
  • Ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team; flexibility, integrity, and professionalism are required.
  • Knowledge of applicable local and international standards and statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Detailed knowledge of technical specifications of general process equipment.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret prints/drawings and other technical documents that describe the system and processes.
  • Ability to read and understand policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Organized, goal-driven, and self-motivated, excellent problem-solving skills.
  • MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills for both internal and external interactions.
  • Commitment to high-quality requirements.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a suitable driving record that meets company driver requirements.
Physical Demands
  • Work assignments may be required inside an operating plant, which requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb, and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception, and focus.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer, ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboard.
  • Must be able to travel if required.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, and climb on a ladder or up and down stairs.
  • Must be able to drive a company vehicle to and from job sites or office locations.
  • Must be able to attend job walks wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) in an operating facility in a hot climate.
  • Lifting to 25 pounds may be required.
